Annotated Bibliography: Final Draft

This is a paper I wrote for the second assignment. This assignment required me to choose a poem from the Composition Mix textbook, accumulate credible sources, and annotate the sources to form an abstract. The purpose of this assignment is to sculp the information needed to write our third assignment. I wrote about the poem "Because I Could Not Stop For Death" by Emily Dickinson.

Abstract

The literary devices found within the poem “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” by Emily Dickinson will be the topic of my paper. This topic will be developed by discussing the use of 3 literary devices, which include symbolism, metaphor, and imagery. I have listed 5 sources that will address the use of the literary devices.  These 5 peer reviews are what my paper will be based on paragraph by paragraph. They each have been evaluated and outlined. My working thesis statement is Emily Dickinson uses symbolism, metaphors, and imagery to elevate the story and convey a deeper meaning.

Annotated Bibliography

Abbott, Collamer M. "Dickinson's Because I Could Not Stop for Death." The Explicator 58.3 (2000): 140-3. ProQuest. http://www.proquest.com/scholarly-journals/dickinsons-because-i-could-not-stop-for-death/docview/216774706/se-2?accountid-39906

Within this article, Abbott Collamer states that metaphoric power is used in this poem. Abbott Collamer supported this theory by stating once the reader realizes Emily is comparing the “House” to a stone burial vault, the imagery in her poems can be fully appreciated. Abbott Collamer also stated that Emily’s figure of “House” expands the symbolism beyond the grave to a hospitable dwelling. This source is credible because it was published in a peer-reviewed academic journal. I will use this source to convey information to support my thesis.

Encle, Patricia. "Dickinson's BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP FOR DEATH." The Explicator 60.2 (2002): 72-5. ProQuest.  Dickinson's BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP FOR DEATH - ProQuest

In this text, Patricia Encle states that imagery is used within the poem “Because I Could Not Stop For Death” by Emily Dickinson. Patricia supports her theory by stating the phrases “School,” “Grazing Grain,” and “Setting Sun” are representing the 3 stages of life. I will use this source to support my thesis and explain the literary devices. This source is a credible source due to the fact it was published in a peer-reviewed academic journal.

Frank, Bernhard. “Dickinson’s Because I Could Not Stop For Death--.” The Explicator , vol. 58, no. 2, 2000 pp. 82-83. https://www.proquest.com/scholarly-journals/dickinsons-because-i-could-not-stop-for-death/docview/216774409/se-2?accountid=39906

In the article “Dickinson’s Because I Could Not Stop For Death,” Frank Bernhard states that “verbs of uncertainty and phrases of reversal” are used by Dickinson. Bernhard thoroughly discussed how each phrase was used as a metaphor and the dichotomy that existed between linear and cyclical time; mortality and immortality. The source is credible because it was peer-reviewed in an academic journal. This source will be used to support my thesis and provide further detail on how this poem consisted literary devices.

Marcellino, Ralph. “Emily Dickinson.” College English, vol. 7, no. 2, 1945, pp. 102–03. JSTOR, https://doi.org/10.2307/371092.

In this text, Ralph implies that symbolism is used within Emily Dickinson's poem “Because I Could Not Stop For Death.” Immortality symbolizes life after death. Ralph explained this literary device by listing the phrase “The carriage held but just ourselves and immortality” as evidence. This source was published in a peer-reviewed academic journal therefore, it is credible.

Spencer, Mark. "Dickinson's BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP FOR DEATH." The Explicator 65.2 (2007): 95-6. ProQuest.

In this article, Spencer Mark discusses the use of metaphors in the poem “Because I Could Not Stop For Death.” Spencer supported this information by stating the horses pulled her carriage “toward Eternity” which describes the transition from death to afterlife. This source is credible because it was published in a peer-reviewed academic journal. I will use this source to support my thesis and further explain the literary devices.
